Eco-Friendly Cardmaking

Earth Day is on Tuesday,April 22, 2025

In a world where taking care of the enviornment is more important than ever, combining creativity with eco-consciousness can make a meaningful impact. Creating handmade greeting cards not only allows you to express your artistic flair but also offers an opportunity to contribute positively to the environment.

Why Choose

Photo of left over paper strips

Eco-Friendly Cardmaking?

Traditional cardmaking often involves materials that can be harmful to the environment, such as non-recyclable papers, glitter, and plastic embellishments. By opting for sustainable practices, you reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and promote a healthier planet—all while crafting beautiful, heartfelt cards.

Tips for Sustainable Cardmaking

  1. Opt for Recycled Paper and Cardstock
Choose paper products made from 100% post-consumer waste. These materials often come in various textures and colors, providing a unique aesthetic to your cards. Using recycled paper helps reduce the demand for virgin paper, thereby saving trees and decreasing landfill waste.Making your own paper from recycled paper is a breat and fun idea.

  2. Repurpose Everyday Items
Give new life to materials you already have. Old magazines, cereal boxes, and even used greeting cards can be transformed into stunning new creations. This not only saves money but also minimizes waste.

  3. Use Eco-Friendly Inks and Adhesives
Select inks that are vegetable-based or water-soluble, and adhesives that are non-toxic and biodegradable. These choices are safer for both you and the environment.

  4. Incorporate Natural Elements
Enhance your cards with dried flowers, leaves, or twine. These natural embellishments add a rustic charm and are compostable, aligning with eco-friendly practices.

  5. Avoid Plastic Packaging
When gifting or selling your cards, use recyclable or biodegradable packaging materials. Avoid plastic sleeves; instead, consider paper bands or boxes made from recycled materials.

Embrace the Beauty of Sustainable Creativity

Eco-friendly cardmaking is not just a trend—it's a commitment to preserving our planet while sharing joy and love through your art. By making mindful choices in your crafting process, you contribute to a larger movement of sustainability and conscious living.

Card & Letter Writing Habits of Each Generation

After so many years of making my cards and selling them at craft fairs and online, I have noticed a vast difference between those who buy my cards and those who don't!

At craft fairs older people tended to stop , look and buy.

Of the middle aged people who stop, some buy and others don't.

Forget the younger generation!

To them, my cards are invisible and so am I !

Let me share what I learned when I did a bit of research on the card & letter writing habits of each generation.

I learned that each generation is shaped by unique historical, social, and economic influences,

contributing to their distinct identities and values.

Baby Boomers (1946-1964)

Characteristics: This generation is known for its significant impact on society, culture, and the economy,

primarily due to the post-World War II baby boom.

Baby boomers experienced dramatic social changes, including the civil rights movement,

the Vietnam War, and the rise of counterculture.

Values: They tend to value hard work, loyalty, and team-oriented approaches.

Many have a strong sense of community and place importance on personal relationships and face-to-face interactions.

Thier patents lived and survived the Great Depression which influenced how they were raised.

Baby Boomers often favor traditional methods, valuing handwritten notes and greeting cards

as personal and meaningful expressions of sentiment.

Their letters tend to reflect a sense of nostalgia, often incorporating thoughtful messages.

************************************************************

 Generation X (1965-1980)

Characteristics: Often referred to as the "sandwich generation," Gen Xers are known for their adaptability and resilience,

having grown up during economic uncertainty and significant shifts in social norms.

They are the first generation to experience a significant increase in divorce rates among parents.

Values: This generation values independence, work-life balance, and skepticism towards authority.

They are often seen as pragmatic and resourceful, favoring a do-it-yourself attitude.

Generation X appreciates a blend of traditional and modern approaches,

sometimes using cards for special occasions while also embracing email and digital communication for practicality.

**************************************************************

 Millennials (1981-1996)

Characteristics: Also known as Generation Y, millennials grew up during the rise of the internet and technology.

They are characterized by their comfort with digital communication and social media.

Many entered the workforce during the

Great Recession (2008-2009),

impacting their career trajectories and financial stability.

Values: Millennials value diversity, inclusivity, and social justice.

They often prioritize experiences over material possessions and are known for their desire for meaningful work and work-life balance.

Millennials are more inclined to use digital formats, often opting for e-cards and social media messages,

though they still value the sentiment of sending a physical card for important milestones.

*******************************************************************

Generation Z (1997-2012)

Characteristics: The first generation to grow up with smartphones and social media from a young age,

Gen Z is highly connected and informed.

They are more diverse than previous generations

and have been shaped by global events such as climate change, political unrest, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Values: Gen Z tends to prioritize authenticity, mental health, and social responsibility.

They are tech-savvy, entrepreneurial,

and seek brands and employers that align with their values.

Generation Z is predominantly digital-first, relying on instant messaging and social media for communication,

but they may occasionally appreciate personalized gifts or cards that stand out in a world dominated by screens,

often adding a creative or artistic touch to make them memorable.

*************************************************************

In conclusion , while Baby Boomers may cherish handwritten correspondence, younger generations tend to gravitate towards quicker,

more digital forms of communication, reflecting the evolving nature of how we connect.

The Importance of a Card

An online friend recently lost her dad. After her period of mourning was over she  was back online and expressed how moved she was to have received so many expressions of sympathy.

Most of the messages were in the form of emails or posts to her Facebook wall. But the most precious and heart warming messages were those sent by mail either in the form of a card or a letter.

She is an email person and never sent a card to anyone. All of her well wishes or condolences were always sent by email.

She went on to explain that there was something  very special

about having gotten those cards and letters in the mail.

As strange as it sounds there was a form of healing that took place

when she held those cards and letters in her hands.

She came to realize how very special these items are

and told us how ,unlike the emails,

she was going save these cards and letters as a keep sake.

Her hope is to someday take them out and read them again. She knows that they will continue to comfort her

An email is quick and easy...but a card or letter is more difficult. It takes time and thought and conveys to the receiver that you took the time and you thought of them.

As I create my note cards I am thinking of the person who will send it and the person who will receive it.

There is an unspoken bond between me and the sender. How so? In the process of creating I give a piece of myself. I express through my art.

Likewise the sender also gives a piece of themselves. The message they write  reveals the thoughts and the sentiments of their heart.

There are some of us who have lost loved ones . We have only their memory. Sometimes if we're  lucky we have an old tattered

birthday card or a short note they scribbled and sent to us.

It's not just a piece of paper...it's a memory, an object of deep sentimental value.

I firmly believe that the written letter or card speaks to the heart better than any email can. An email can never replace a tangible handwritten note that can create a memory and remains behind long after we are gone.

I  would love to hear from you. I am interested in what you have to say

because  it's important to me so please  leave a comment and let me know what you think about the topic of sending cards.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Until Next time.

Welcome to My Blog

This is my first blog post. I'm not going to give you a list of materials followed by instructions on how to create a card. NO! My blog will be my thoughts about art, life and correspondence .

Drawing and any form of creativity is my air, my food, my drug of choice. It was and still is my passion  and my life. Every day I must find time to draw even if it was just to doddle.

I am not an expert on art. In fact I have really never studied art with the exception of an art history class I took many years ago as well as an adult watercolor class about 2 years later. But just because I never studied art in college does not mean that my talent for creating is any less. I believe that I would have been exposed to more art forms that would have helped me unleash this energy I have over flowing inside of me.

I often wonder what my life would have been like had I pursued art. What would have been the forms of art that I would have mastered.
It is what it is! Instead of looking back and wondering what if, I want to look ahead and say "I'm ready and here I come."

I spent a life time living my life raising children, earning a living, being a wife just like the rest of the world. Inside of me there was a earning to get back to what I loved the most which was to draw, color  and play just like I did when I was  a child.
I decided not to linit my art to a canvas or an art journal but to create mini forms of art in the form of notecards, greeting cards and stationery sets.

So here I am! I have lived more years than I have left and I am determined to make the love of art and creating  Mynotecards a central part of my life.
I believe in the power of handmade creations and the joy they bring to both the creator and the receiver.
With my passion for art, I ensure that each card is a labor of love, resulting in a high-quality, exclusive piece that will make your loved ones feel cherished and appreciated.

A handmade card  or hand written note is note just a piece of paper; it's a memory,an object of deep sentimental value.
A tangible handwritten note can create a memory and remains behind long after we are gone

Art is the music of my heart. It is a song that plays within me. The melody that I play is not heard by one’s ears but rather seen with one’s eyes. My art is the song of my heart, a tune whose notes only I can hear in the stillness of the night and in the midst of the day’s chaos.

Come with me on this journey.
